Fed; More Australian holidaying at home

A new report has found Australians are increasing visits to family and friends insteadof travelling overseas.

A report by the Bureau of Tourism Research has found that in 2002 the number of nightsAustralians spent visiting family and friends jumped by eight per cent compared with theprevious year.

GRAHAM PERRY, chief executive of the domestic marketing campaign See Australia, isn'tsurprised by the report.

He says people are nowadays thinking twice about travelling overseas.

He says September 11, Bali, and now the War in Iraq and SARS are changing people's travel habits.

But Mr PERRY says it's important for the local tourism industry that the uncertaintydoesn't produce a cocooning effect.

He says in uncertain times people tend to cocoon in their homes -- spending money onhome items and putting it in the bank for a rainy day.
